The African Cultural Association was borne out of the annual African Festival held in Lowell since 2000. The first was held at the J.F. Kennedy Civic Center in downtown Lowell. It was a great success and received favorable reviews from both the Lowell Sun and the Boston Globe. It has continued as an annual event featuring performing arts, as well as traditional and modern African arts and crafts.

The high level of interest the original African Festival generated made it clear that a permanent organization promoting an understanding of African cultures would be well received by the community, thus, the African Cultural Association Inc. (ACA) was born. The immediate focus was to provide Africans living in the Merrimack Valley and Greater Boston area with a means to come together to deal with common issues, opportunities, and concerns.

In February 2002, the African Cultural Association was incorporated as a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization. This association has board members as well as an executive committee. The African festival is one of the major activities sponsored by the African Cultural Association Inc. This association is one of the first African organizations of its kind in the United States.

Now into its eighth year, the African Festival is standing tall and continues to attract Africans and lovers of African culture from all over Massachusetts and beyond. The African Festival has also opened up an opportunity for Africans to unite with their African-American brothers and sisters as they continue to influence each other through the richness of their shared cultures.

If you would like to help the African Cultural Association, please consider investing in our success by way of a tax deductible donation!
